Diagnostic Audiology

Adult diagnostic hearing assessment is designed to identify a degree and type of hearing loss and provide the audiologist sufficient information to decide on the best course of action to manage your hearing concerns. The hearing assessment will typically include a comprehensive case history, Pure Tone Audiometry, where hearing is assessed under the headphones in a sound treated environment, to determine the hearing thresholds (softest sound audible to a patient). This is done through both air and bone conduction (various types of headphones.) Frequently this procedure is accompanied by tympanometry, to confirm the middle ear status as well as speech discrimination testing and speech-in-noise testing to evaluate the impact of loss and confirm accuracy of results. Diagnostic consultation will include a comprehensive report to your doctor or for your record. For diagnostic consultation please ring 03 9530 6120 or e-mail info@ablehearing.com.au

Free Hearing Check

Once we assess your hearing and if we mutually decide that hearing aid(s) are the best course of action we will discuss in depth your hearing aid options and schedule an extended consultation for the purpose of fitting your new hearing aids.

Electroacoustic Fitting and Verification

We utilize a wide range of sophisticated electro-acoustic fitting equipment and in-depth audiological knowledge to set the hearing instrument to best reflect your hearing requirements. All the outcomes are verified in both the clinical and real life settings and day to day care and maintenance of hearing aids you've selected is discussed and practiced.

Fine tuning and Follow Up

We routinely request that you return to discuss your hearing experiences to assist us to fine tune your devices to better reflect your hearing needs. Once the aids are optimally tuned our relationship does not end - we are available to support you and to maintain your new hearing instruments to ensure best possible hearing outcomes.

Annual Aid Adjustment

We recommend a review of your hearing and hearing goals as well as checking, cleaning and adjusting your hearing aids once a year. We have learned from experience that when the hearing aids are serviced regularly they work more reliably and have fewer break downs.

Hearing Aid Fitting Procedure

We are happy to assess children from 12 months onward. Assessing toddler's hearing usually involves conditioning them to respond to presented sounds through a speaker using a toy (e.g., looking for a puppet/toy to appear once a sound is presented). For children 3-4 years of age or older ear specific adult-like procedures are used with headphones over the ears. In addition to determining a child's hearing levels, paediatric audiologists will also assess each child's middle ear status using a middle ear analyzer machine (tympanometer) . Young children (particularly those younger than 7 years of age) are more susceptible to middle ear problems (often referred to as glue ear) as their middle ear systems are still developing. For a paediatric consultation please ring 03 9530 6120 or e-mail info@ablehearing.com.au

Paediatric Hearing Assessment

Tinnitus Management

While tinnitus is a fairly common problem, there are many effective methods to treat (or at least reduce the impact of) the sensation.

The first step to effective manage tinnitus is to find an underlying cause. You should have a medical examination with an ENT specialist and a consultation with an audiologist. A full hearing evaluation should be conducted by an audiologist as a part of the investigative process.

Tinnitus can be associated with conditions that occur at all levels of the auditory system. Some of these conditions are:

  • Impacted wax

  • Middle ear infections

  • Noise induced or age-related hearing loss

  • Vascular problems

  • Ménière's disease

  • Ototoxic medications

  • Migraine

  • Epilepsy

  • Auditory nerve problems

Once the cause is identified a range of tinnitus management options can be discussed.

Musician's Ear Plugs

To assist professional or amature muscians or people with oversensitive ears (hyeracousis) we are able offer custom-made musician's ear plugs. Designed to replicate the natural response of the open ear, musician's ear plugs replicate normal quality of sound quality, lowering the volume to a safe and comfortable level.

They are ideal to protect a perforated ear drum or to keep the water out when you are swimming or surfing to prevent infection or discomfort. They are moulded to the shape of your ears and will not fall out.
